Blue Bird Nesting and Eggs

The bluebird is an extremely beautiful bird which is very likely to be a visitor in your backyard of you has a feeding table and the right kind of food for it. Some people go as far as putting up birdhouses so that the bluebird can stay in the area as long as it pleases. The bluebird will nest in the birdhouses and soon lay eggs. If constructing a bluebird trail, a long series of bluebird birdhouses, the young will soon move in nest door and the area will be swarming with bluebirds.

The bluebird is actually not one species but three, the Eastern Bluebird, the Western Bluebird and the Mountain Bluebird, and they are all native to the American continent. The bluebirds are named after they distinct blue coat, although sometimes red also makes its way into it. The bluebird is an insectivore which means that it preferably lives of eating insects. The bluebird may eat different kinds of grains, nuts and raisins but only when there are not enough insects to go around. Because of its hunting habits the bluebird is highly territorial and will need an open strip of grassland to soar over. Unfortunately insects does not contain enough moist to sustain the bluebird so a close vicinity to water is also needed.

Obviously there are no birdhouses just growing naturally from trees so the bluebird needs to find another kind of home for building its nest in. Natural hollows in trees are commonly used and also holes originally made by a woodpecker are perfect for the bluebird to make its own. Once a new home is found the bluebird will start to collects building materials for the nest. Different kinds of grass and scenting pine needles are in majority but also dog hairs and different kinds of plastic products can be found in a bluebirds nest. Providing with building material in your own backyard will ensure that the bluebird is comfortable to move in to your birdhouse.

Bluebirds once a year and the whole procedure begin very early with the male scouting for possible nest sites. In the beginning of spring the male bluebird will then try to attract a female by a series of special behaviours including singing and flapping its wings. An interested female will follow the male to inspect the nest and if all is sufficient they will mate. The female will then construct the nest and, once laid, incubate the eggs. The eggs are quite small and a real treat to some predatory animals such as snakes, cats and raccoons. Help the poor bluebird mother and keep an eye out for these animals. The Common Starling and House Sparrow are very competitive when it comes to nesting places and is known to not only kill the young bluebirds in a nest but also throw out the entire nest so that they can build their own.
